Anna Maria Island Things To Do with Dogs

The glowing Florida sun, the year-round gulf breeze, the top attractions on a quaint Florida island. Anna Maria Island is the place to be.

So what are some of the best things you can do with your pet along for the ride? Thankfully, there’s a lot! You can dine out with friends and family with your pup. You can visit a nearby park and let them go crazy or you can stay by your Anna Maria Island rental and just enjoy the ambiance.

Can you Take Your Dog to the Beach?

The first question many of our guests ask is if they can bring their dog to the beach. For the most part, the answer is no. The City of Anna Maria does not allow dogs on the beach, given a few exceptions. You can bring dogs near some of the beaches but not actually on the sand. There are also nearby dog parks, which will be covered in detail.

Overall, the main reason is to protect the precious sea turtle populations. Birds also nest on the sands, and dogs can easily disturb them. While it may be discouraging, when you see a dog tear through a nest of sea turtle eggs, you would be right on board with the city!

Dog Parks

The city has helped develop a number of awesome dog parks for you to take your pup. The Holmes Beach Dog Park is an exceptional place to let your pup off the leash.

The most prominent place to take dogs is Bayfront Park near the City Pier. This gorgeous par area has a playground for the kids, picnic tables for eating, and a beach access point. Remember though, while dogs are allowed at the park, this does not include the beach.

The last major park we wanted to mention is Herb Dolan Park in Bradenton Beach. This friendly neighborhood park has an area for pups, basketball courts, a playground, and a pavilion with picnic tables. It is another warm and cozy place to bring your dog for a nice afternoon under the sun (or in the cooler shade).

Other Nearby Parks

You can also wander off through Robinson’s Preserve. There are miles (and miles) of boardwalk pathways for you to explore with a dog. There is also a sensational tower in the preserve where you can see the nearby gulf and the dense wetlands from high up.

Finally, for beach areas, we also recommend the adorable Palma Sola Causeway Park. The park has some marsh and dune vegetation ready for exploring. While it may be quaint, it does provide some nice shade, horseback riding opportunities, and a place to play with your dog.

Pet Friendly Anna Maria Island Restaurants

What would any pet-friendly trip be without a stop for breakfast or lunch? Ginny and Jane E’s eclectic and funky coffee and bar café is well-known for their embrace of all dogs, small or large. You may even find a treat or two. Stop by for a breakfast sandwich and latte in this absurdly colorful local favorite.

We also recommend Harry’s Grill for burgers and fish sandwiches. Pets are allowed on the outdoor patio, right up by the water.

Finally, check out the outside deck of the Gulf Drive Café. You can nab some classic local Florida seafood right on the beachfront.
